As of 2 p.m., Hurricane Milton has strengthened into a category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph. The National Weather Service has issued hurricane and flood watches for Marion County and also warns of the possibility of tornadoes.
On Monday, the NWS in Jacksonville issued a hurricane watch and a flood watch for eastern, central, and western Marion County, including Anthony, Burbank, Ocala, and Weirsdale.
The flood watch is in effect until Thursday afternoon and the hurricane watch is in effect as of this morning. The hurricane watch means that “hurricane-force winds are possible somewhere within the area within the next 48 hours,” according to the organization.
The NWS says that Hurricane Milton will create “sustained tropical force winds” with the possibility of “frequent hurricane force gusts” across Marion County and north central Florida from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning.
As of 2 p.m., the eye of the hurricane was located about 700 miles southwest of Tampa. It is currently moving east at 9 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center of the hurricane, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles.
The hurricane is forecast to move near or just north of the Yucatan Peninsula today and Tuesday, then cross the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west coast of the Florida Peninsula by Wednesday.
As of 10:59 a.m., the NWS estimates gusts will peak locally in Marion County between “30-40 mph, with some gusts to 65 mph.” The NWS also reports that tornadoes are possible within the outer rainbands through Wednesday night over portions of north Florida, including Marion County.
The National Hurricane Center reports Hurricane Milton will make landfall along the west coast of Florida sometime between Wednesday and Thursday.
Before it makes landfall in Florida, the hurricane is expected to produce rainfall and flooding, damaging winds, and storm surge to large parts of north, northeast, and north central Florida.
Another local update will be provided for Marion County and north central Florida later this evening at around 5:30 p.m.
Local officials have provided several resources and updates in the past 24 hours.
On Sunday, Marion County Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday in anticipation of the hurricane.
Sandbag sites opened at 7 a.m. this morning across the county. According to the county, bags will be provided at the self-serve locations and a limited number of shovels will be available. Residents are encouraged to bring their own equipment if possible. Officials request that each person limit their use to 10 bags per vehicle. Here is a complete list of the sandbag sites:

MARION COUNTY, Florida [Monday, October 7, 2024] – Due to the current projected path of Hurricane Milton, Marion County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order for those living in mobile homes, RVs, modular-type homes, and any structure in which the resident feels unsafe. The mandatory evacuation order will go into effect on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
Those living in these homes should know that if they remain in these locations, emergency personnel will not respond to their location until it is deemed safe to do so. Residents are encouraged to first seek shelter with family or friends living in a site-built home constructed after 1994 to ensure compliance with modern building codes. If that option is not available, Marion County has several shelters listed below for residents to utilize.

The MCSO Sexual Offender and Predator Unit will close to the public for registration activities on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. and will open as an emergency shelter for Registered Sexual Offenders and Predators at 6:00 p.m. that day. Please contact the unit by phone during normal business hours to request early acceptance. Emergency acceptances will be handled as needed after the shelter opens.
Sexual Offenders and Predators at this shelter should bring any prescribed medication, and no medical marijuana, alcohol, or weapons are allowed. They should also bring food and snacks, a pillow, a blanket, a sleeping bag, and hygiene items. Once inside the shelter, they will not be able to leave until the storm passes and it is safe to travel. They will NOT be able to bring any guests with them. If the storm increases in severity, the shelter will move to the Marion County Jail. If the shelter is moved to the jail, tobacco products and cell phones will not be allowed.
The Sexual Offender and Predator Unit will be available 24 hours a day by phone at (352) 368-3517 beginning 8:00 a.m. Tuesday until the storm has passed. They will also be available to field any emergency registration requests; however, non-emergency requests will be handled during normal business hours beginning 8:00 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024. Thursday’s hours will be determined after the storm assessment is completed for safety purposes.

A hurricane warning is now in effect for central, eastern, and western Marion County for Hurricane Milton, which has maximum sustained winds of over 180 mph as of 5:30 p.m., and Marion County officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents living in mobile homes and RVs.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management division issued the mandatory evacuation order this afternoon.
The county is advising residents who live in mobile homes, RVs, modular-type homes, and site-built homes constructed before 1994 that “if they remain in these locations, emergency personnel will not respond to their location until it is deemed safe to do so.”
“Residents are encouraged to first seek shelter with family or friends living in a site-built home constructed after 1994 to ensure compliance with modern building codes. If that option is not available, Marion County has several shelters listed below for residents to utilize,” reads the statement from the county.
Earlier today, the National Weather Service announced flood and hurricane watches in western, eastern, and central Marion County.
The hurricane watch has been upgraded to a hurricane warning. While a hurricane watch means that conditions are possible, a hurricane warning means that conditions are expected.
In addition to the flood watch and hurricane warning, the NWS is advising that tornadoes are possible within the “outer rainbands” through Wednesday night.
Currently, hurricane-force winds extend outward around 30 miles from Hurricane Milton’s Center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles.
As of 5:23 p.m., Hurricane Milton was 740 miles southwest of Ocala.
The NWS says the strong winds from the hurricane may leave “mobile homes severely damaged, with some destroyed.” They say some mobile home parks may be “uninhabitable for weeks.”
As of 5:00 p.m., Ocala and Marion County have the “potential for wind from 74 to 110 mph,” with the NWS advising residents to plan for “life-threatening wind of equivalent CAT 1 or 2 hurricane force.”
On Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation announced that various highways will open their shoulders to help facilitate evacuations for the hurricane.
“Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) plans are actively being put in place for Eastbound I-4 and portions of Northbound I-75. Law enforcement and signage will alert motorists on when to enter and exit the shoulder,” reads a statement from FDOT.
Locally, Marion County officials have provided several resources and updates for local residents.

Ocala and Marion County officials are gearing up for Milton, which was at hurricane strength on Sunday and is expected to become a major hurricane by the time it makes landfall Wednesday along Florida's west coast.
Here's what we know:
Will Marion County Public Schools be closed this week?
The school district announced Sunday afternoon that there will be no school Wednesday or Thursday. Also, there will be no extracurricular activities Tuesday night.
Is Marion County under a state of emergency?
Yes. Gov. Ron DeSantis included Marion among the 35 counties under a state of emergency on Saturday. On Sunday he expanded that number to 51.
Separately, the Marion County Commission held a special meeting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and declared a local state of emergency.
What weather effects will Marion County feel from Milton?
Preston Bowlin, the county's emergency management director, told the county commission that Marion could experience 58-73 mph winds, or even stronger, closer to wind speeds associated with a Category 1 hurricane (74-95 mph.) The effects are expected to be felt starting Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
